How to set screen-time limits on Android TV and Google TV

tvusage Team · · 2 min read

tvusage lets you set how long an app can be used each day and the hours when it is available. Start with one app, such as YouTube, and check the rule on your TV before adding more. A daily limit and a schedule can work together.

Set your first app limit

  1. Complete tvusage setup.

Follow the consent and permission screens and set a parent PIN. Keep the PIN private. If your TV needs extra setup, follow the linked manufacturer or permissions guide rather than skipping a permission and assuming the controls are active.

  2. Open the app’s controls.

Select the app in tvusage. Find Daily screentime and choose Configure. Set the daily allowance you want, such as one hour. This is time used during the day, not a single continuous session or a promise that every app gets that amount.

  3. Choose when the app is available.

Use Usage hours to add allowed periods for the relevant days. For example, you could allow weekday use between homework and bedtime. The app can be unavailable outside those hours even when some daily allowance remains.

Check before handing over the remote

Open the controlled app during an allowed period. Confirm that usage increases in tvusage and that the limit or schedule produces the expected restriction. You can temporarily use a short allowance for this check, then restore your intended daily rule.

A PIN lock is a different control: it protects access with the parent PIN. An Unlimited app is treated differently from apps that consume the overall device allowance. Review those settings if an app remains available when you expected it to be restricted.

If enforcement does not work, check permissions, the active profile, and the device-specific setup instructions. Send support the TV model, Android version, tvusage version, and the rule you tested. For multiple children or multiple screens, use the related guides to set up profiles before extending your rules.
