Choosing controls
Daily limits, usage hours, and watch breaks: which should you use?
Use a daily limit to set how much time is available, usage hours to set when an app is available, and watch breaks to interrupt a long session. Choose the control that matches your goal. You can combine them without treating them as three names for the same rule.
Daily limits: how much time
A daily allowance measures accumulated use during the day. For example, sixty minutes for an app is a total budget, not sixty minutes every time it opens. Select the app and configure Daily screentime. Choose a Device rule when you want an overall allowance across counted apps.
With the same synced profile on multiple devices, shared allowances use that profile’s combined usage. Per-app rules follow Android app identifiers; TV and mobile variants with different identifiers can remain separate. Apps marked Unlimited are excluded from the overall Device budget.

Usage hours: when it can open
Usage hours define allowed periods for the relevant days. You might allow entertainment after homework and before bedtime. A child can have unused daily time and still be outside the allowed hours. If you configure both controls, check both before expecting an app to remain available.
Set different periods for weekdays and weekends if your routine changes. Keep the schedule understandable: one clear allowed window is easier to explain and verify than several overlapping periods. Check the day and time on the supervised device when a schedule seems wrong.
Watch breaks: pause a long session
Use Set break time in an app’s controls to configure watch breaks. This is useful when your goal is a pause during continuous viewing rather than a smaller daily allowance. A break does not replace the app’s daily budget or its allowed hours.
Start with the smallest combination that solves your problem. For bedtime, set usage hours. For a daily boundary, set an allowance. For long uninterrupted sessions, add a break. Test the chosen controls before handing over the device, and explain what will happen when each rule takes effect.
